Leg Cramps

Sun, 16 Mar 2008 16:30:17 -0400
I had suffered from leg cramps so bad at night that I would have a hard time getting out of bed and my foot would not let me place it on the floor...They were so severe that I would often yell out....I was in Walmart and saw a box with the wording for leg cramps...the name is CALCET and I take 2 or 3 each night with 6 ounces of orange juice and now I have no more leg cramps..Hope this will work for others.

INGREDIENTS: Tonic Water
INSTRUCTIONS: Yup, Tonic Water is the way to go. Even the sugar-free kind works. (tonic water, yellow label, contains quinine). Cheaper than the pharmacy. Keep 1 in the kitchen, 1 on the headboard, etc. Drink about 8oz. when cramp starts and in less than 2 min., cramp is gone. Gotta love this stuff.

INGREDIENTS:
INSTRUCTIONS: This is a good remedy for muscle cramps when you are out and have no access to salt and water. As soon as the cramp starts, pinch and massage the muscle where it hurts the most. This helps alleviate the cramp much much faster than by itself. It works best on upper leg muscles but I am sure it would halp with most any cramp.

INSTRUCTIONS: This may not apply to many people but it seems worthtrying since it appears to work on me. ( I'm 60 and thin.) I was having those "leap out of bed" cramps thatare intensly painful and almost impossible to stop due to the strength of the lower leg muscles. Idon't hold this up as thesolution for anyone but me but when I see such a wide array of solutions from different people, it seems reasonable that different things affect different people. Somaybe this will help a few.

The problem for me is temperature. Not cold feet, but feet and legsthat are too warm relative to myupper body. I realized my legs would cramp most often when sitting in bed with my legs under cover. We did not evolve withour feet under cover. We evolved with an animal skin over our upper body or another human next to our body and our legs naturally were coldest and less covered. Today we sit in bed with our legs under the cover to regulate our body temperature. We lose most of our heat from our upper body and head. Even in relatively warm air conditioning, some of us have to regulate our temperature with a sheet or cover.

The theory is that if you regulate your overall body temperature by covering your legs and feet, that throws some sort of monkey wrench in the system and the lower legs and feet get crampy. If you regulate your temperature with a sheet or cover on your upper body, and let your
feet be exposed or covered less heavily, your body will not have leg cramps. If you need to cover your legs and feet, make sure you have more cover on your body (pelvis to neck)so that your feet are still less well covered than the rest of you.

For those of you like me, avoid warm feet. :-)

INGREDIENTS: Tums
INSTRUCTIONS: This is especially for pregnant women that get leg cramps at night. I was having them every night when I was pregnent, my OBGYN told me to take 2 tums every night before going to bed. He said Leg cramps is a sign of low calcium. I did it and never had leg cramps again

Hey, I figured you and the whole world should know that, a teaspoon of applesider vineger in a glass of water, one times per day, for a few weeks will ELIMINATE leg cramps for years. If they persist, keep up on the vineger. I had cramps for years, really bad ones. I drank the vinegar and water solution for a few months, and I swear I haven't had a leg cramp in
10 years! It's also the best cure for (anal itching) skin rashes. Put some apple sider vinegar on a rag, or paper towel, wipe over infected area, and walla...no more scratching. I really hope you post this, it works!

INGREDIENTS: Magnesium, Vit E, Microwaved rice bags, stretching
INSTRUCTIONS: Keep leg(s) warm, esp. at night. I always wear knee socks, & a polar fleece loose bootie-up-to-the-knee (hand-designed/made) & lay legs on top of warmth. Used to use hot water bottle, which would stay warm all night. Now use mini-pillow stuffed with rice & heated in microwave 3 min, wrapped in towel to hold in heat & keep from burning my legs. The hot rice doesn't stay warm as long, but don't have to worry about leaking! Stretching exercise suggested by my best friend chiropractor. Face wall, brace with hands at jaw level, feet well back from wall. Bending your back so hips get closer to wall stretches the calf muscles. Knees are locked straight. This helps even the worst cramps. Also try simple heel lifts, while just standing. I think if I walked each evening that that would also help prevent or alleviate it.
----------------------------------------------
BEFORE BEDTIME:

Vit e (relaxes)
Magnesium (relaxes body, stops cramps & stops stress-incontinence too!
400-750mg - too much gives diarrhea)
Postpone calcium til morning (binds the magnesium so magnesium wont work as well).Believe it or not, all this has worked over 20yrs now. Used to have rls most nights, sometimes for so many hrs, get hysterical about 4am cuz can't sleep & cant stop the cramps. Now only have an episode 1-2 times a year!

INGREDIENTS: sewing thread
INSTRUCTIONS: Take regular sewing thread and cut into a length long enough to tie around your ankle, but let it be slightly loose. I'm not sure how it works, but the thread will knot up instead of your muscles.

Ingredients: Calcium w/Magnesium tablets
Instructions: Take 3 calcium w/Magnesium tablets whenever you are experiencing any kind of muscle cramps/pain. Within 30 mins., the pain should begin to subside. Great for menstrual cramps, too.I've been a Home Health Care professional for almost 20 yrs. and have used this remedy myself with success.

I have had severe leg night cramps for most of my adult life. I found out from a physical therapist recently that because I drink little
water and do drink coffee I am dehydrating my body from frequent urination. The electrolyte in my body becomes too concentrated. This also applies to beer drinkers. Now I keep a sport bottle of water next to the bed and if a night cramp happens I drink as much water as I can as quick as I can. The cramp always goes away immediately.I have tried bananas, Quinine, tonic water, vitamin e and vitamin c. and calcium. The bottle of water works best of them all.
Dave

The best thing that I have found for leg cramps is Potassium tablets. I take Potassium tablets every day, anywhere from one to four or five depending on how much I feel I need at the time. Lack of Potassium (found in bananas) will cause leg cramps that hurt like crazy. As long as I stay on Potassium I am OK. Potassium also regulates the water in your system so it helps get rid of the excess fluid. I have taken Potassium for over 25 years on a regular basis and the times I slacked off, I end up with cramps again. If I do get a leg cramp, I immediately take three to five Potassium and and no more cramps.

Ingredients: Quinine tablets
Instructions: All the females on my mother's side of the family suffer from "Restless Leg Syndrome" as it is clinically known. It usually kicks in around bedtime or when we are sitting and relaxing. It gets so bad that we can't sleep and have to get up and walk around for awhile just to calm it down. We have tried everything from prescriptions to tonic water. My sister finally found an over-the-counter cure because we could not stand the taste of tonic water. They are tablets with quinine. You can get them at Walgreens or Wal-Mart for sure. It is a tiny bottle (in a redish colored box)that says "Leg Cramps". Just one works for me and I try to take it a 1/2 hour to an hour before bedtime (because that
is when it hits me). They are wonderful! There are no side effects that I'm aware of and they cram that little bottle with pills so you get your money's worth.

Ingredients: Water and exercise
Instructions: *All you have to do is drink as much water as possible. I've learned that water streches out with your muscles helping to stop all of the cramping. It's all because water isn't getting through your
system. I've learned that from karate. *The main thing that you have to know is not to drink soda.
*EXERCISE daily!

Ingredients: Yellow mustard
Instructions: Take 1 to 2 Teaspoons of mustard (like you put on a hot dog) when you have a leg cramp.
I am a nurse and have given this to all of my patients that would try it. I learned this
from a 90 year of man that was my patient, and it works. He had a leg cramp and asked forthe mustard. The next week, I had a patient that was having leg cramps, and I gave it to her. She said that it works in like 10 seconds, and I have given it to other patients.
